What is an EORI Number - Recap

EORI, abbreviated from Economic Operator Registration and Identification, is a European Union registration and identification number which is assigned to businesses based in Europe who are involved in the import or export of goods from outside of Europe. (Currently if you are sending goods between two EU countries, you do not need an EORI number).

EORI Checker

Before registering for a new EORI number, you should double check that your company is not already signed up.
Please also note that ff your company is registered for VAT, it may have already been issued an EORI number automatically. The issued numbers are usually associated with a company on a permanent basis and have no expiry date.
If you are unsure whether your company has a valid EORI number, there is a helpful EORI number checker which you can access by clicking here.

EORI Numbers & Brexit – What Happens if we Leave?

In theory nothing major will change, so there is no need to panic, however, if the United Kingdom do leave the European Union then it is highly likely that EORI numbers will then be needed for all shipments including those between the UK and the EU. As it stands, EORI numbers are currently not needed between the UK and the rest of Europe.

IMPORTANT – You can NOT legally import or export goods to the UK from outside the EU without an EORI number. The EORI number is a requirement for the customs entry which is lodged with HMRC. If goods arrive into the UK from outside the EU and the importer does not hold a valid EORI number the goods will be held by Customs at the border. You should always use the EORI checker in advance of trading with countries outside of the EU to ensure that a shipment is transported smoothly and without issue. .
